The second Tallyforth mystery is set in the beautiful Isle of Skye, where Detective Chief Inspector Tallyforth has gone for a boating holiday. The holiday is cruelly interrupted by the discovery of the dead body of his travelling companion, the attractive Cassie Dillon, before they can set sail in Willie and Mary MacPherson's boat The Flodigarry.

With only a tape of a Runrig album and a marked map of the Western Isles found by the woman's body, Tallyforth sets off from his base in Portree to search for the truth, despite being forbidden from doing so by the local police in the form of Inspector Maggie Fraser. Issues such as the tolls on the Skye Bridge and the upcoming devolution vote, with its promise at last of freedom from the English yoke for the descendants of Bonnie Prince Charlie, provide a stormy background to the investigations.

It is only when Tallyforth's assistant, Detective Sergeant Georgina (George) Elliott, discovers a hidden history to the dead woman that the solution to the mystery of Cassie Dillon's death begins to become clear. Armed with this information, Tallyforth gradually tightens the net around the murderer.
